california, this place knows me

or rather, the God who knows me, has brought me to this place

these days dawn as I do

awaking, as if from a bad dream

trying to ease into life, grey, muddled and muted

sweetly slipping away from yesterday

       into hoping… trusting

       for a beautiful today

that comes gradual, bright sun and blue skies

golden light bathing, the sea awaking

bursts of flower buds and people living,

              dancing, running, eating, talking, dreaming…

into quiet night where the day

       dies in glorious flames

or washes away in turquoise slumber,

breathing out it's last beauty

leaving you alone, silent in the darkness,

       waiting,

waiting, for the dawn's sure return…

We just moved all the way across the country to California. It is a beautiful part of our incredible country but honestly I have been just soaking it all in before I get my camera out.

This week iheartfaces wants to know why we love the country we call home. My husband is in the military so we have moved all over this country and there are many stories I could tell. I could tell you the challenges of being sent to places we have not enjoyed, the wonder of living in our nation's capital, the comfort of our hometowns in Indiana, the sheer joy of falling in love with California… I could tell you the stories behind our homecoming photos, stories of fear, longing and loneliness, moments of reunion and indescribable happiness…

but right now after several years of wondering what our country was asking us to do and why we were giving up our life together as a family – right now my country means hope and redemption to me. My country is a place where years of sacrifice and hard work have brought us back to a place we love, where my husband is home for dinner and my children are finally happy again.

I am thankful to live in a country where hard work can pay off, where my kids are free to be educated in the way that fits them best, where we can worship as we want and dream big! I know a lot of people's dreams are being ripped away from them right now, times are tough. My prayer this fourth of July was that my children would grow up to know and love America as I do, and that she would still be there for them – the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave!

p.s the photos are from our neighborhood bike parade in honor of the USA this 4th of July 🙂

  • Sue - Husband home for dinner. Happy children. Freedom, safety, and peace. What could be better?

  • Lsquare - My husband is retired Air Force, so I can identify with your story. Such happy pictures of the most colorfully decorated bikes—the kids look so proud!…

Bday cake
One of our Fourth of July traditions is to make a birthday cake for America. We decorate a sheet cake or an ice cream cake with white icing, strawberries and blueberries to make it look like a flag. This really helps the kids understand what in the world we are celebrating amidst all the explosions!

This year we are forgoing the birthday cake since I don't even have my cake pans unpacked yet and there has been no time to get our usual massive firework stockpile prepared. The neighborhood we just moved into is having a bike parade that the kids are excited about and I am loving the 1950's feel of. We will watch some fireworks from afar, cook some good food, get to know our new neighbors and thank God for new beginnings in our lives as we celebrate the beginning of this country!

“Play is what we want to do. Work is what we have to do.” – W. H. Auden

Aaron at play
It’s best when our work is something we want to do, when it is our play. For our kids their play is their work and I think it is oh so important to recognize this and let them play so they can learn. Play is serious business to my little boys and I am thankful for how that keeps our lives in perspective!

Just Playing

When I am building in the block room, please don’t say I’m “just playing”. For you see, I’m learning as I play, about balance and shapes. Who knows, I may be an architect someday.

When I’m getting all dressed up, setting the table, caring for the babies, don’t get the idea I’m “just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play; I may be a mother or a father someday.

When you see me up to my elbows in paint or standing at an easel, or molding and shaping clay, please don’t let me hear you say, “He is just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m expressing myself and being creative. I may be an artist or an inventor someday.

When you see me sitting in a chair “reading” to an imaginary audience, please don’t laugh and think I’m “just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I may be a teacher someday.

When you see me combing the bushes for bugs, or packing my pockets with choice things I find, don’t pass it off as “just play”. For you see, I’m learning as I play. I may be a scientist someday.

When you see me engrossed in a puzzle or some “plaything” at my school, please don’t feel the time is wasted in “play”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m learning to solve problems and concentrate. I may be in business someday.

When you see me cooking or tasting foods, please don’t think that because I enjoy it, it is “just play”. I’m learning to follow direction and see differences. I may be a cook someday.

When you see me learning to skip, hop, run and move my body, please don’t say I’m “just playing”. For, you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m learning how my body works. I may be a doctor, nurse or athlete someday.

When you ask me what I’ve done at school today, and I say, “I just played”, please don’t misunderstand me. For you see, I’m learning as I play. I’m learning to enjoy and be successful in my work. I’m preparing for tomorrow. Today, I am a child and my work is play.

I was going to wear that EXACT outfit out on Friday and my friends said, “No, you have to wear pants!” Ugh, I am just so sick of all these people demanding pants. I mean do you have any idea how hard it is to find Star Wars undies in adult sizes?! I’m just glad SOMEBODY else has heard of No-Pants Friday! 😉

Today I am taking part in sfgirlbybay's "What Home Means to Me" Pin it Forward  event. Bloggers have been visually documenting what home means to them on Pinterest and then passing on the chain through their posts. The Sharpie Chronicles passed the baton to me yesterday and I am handing off to Sandy a la Mode tomorrow…

soooooo anyhoo, What  does Home Mean to Me?

It's a good time for me to reflect on this because all my earthly possessions are boxed up waiting for movers to take them away and I am about to leave the house I have called home for the past four years. I posted here about my need to move on… so I am thankful for a new location to live in and start afresh, and…

I'm not anxious about leaving home because home is always with me! Home is my husband and little boys, our faith in God and the little things we all do to make our lives together rich and fun. Home is the love we share and the silly things we do, it's the traditions carried on and the new lessons learned together.

Home is hard to describe so you can experience my full Pinterest pinboard HERE. Below is a snapshot of part of it…

Home pinboard
I would love to hear what home means to you – oh and it will probably be a bit quiet around here in June as I make my way to our new home!

  • Sandy a la Mode - i love the mix of your pinboard, from the food to the hearts to the boys! i also see an ink and button fascinator on there too (i did a giveaway for one of her fascinators a few months ago)! and thank you so much for introducing me, i can’t wait to share what home means to me tomorrow!
