I have two boys and for us spring isn’t filled with cute bunnies and fluffy chicks. Nope for my boys spring means snakes, bugs, frogs and other creepy crawly creatures they love. So I made them simple, patchwork spring snakes that are cute enough that a little girl could love them too! Read on for the DIY How To…

All you need are scraps of fabric, scissors, fabric marker, ruler, poly-fil stuffing, needle and thread, ribbon or rick rack and your sewing machine! I used a set of cute Michael Miller fabric I got from
Sky Reve Fabrics. (love that shop!)

First cut out 2 sets of strips of scrap fabric 3in wide and of varying heights. The heights need to add up to about 20in. I cut some of mine too wide at first and had to go back and recut. You can lay the fabric on top of each other and cut both sets at the same time.

Next lay a ruler diagonally from the outside edge of one end to the middle of the other. Trace along the ruler with a disappearing ink fabric marker and then cut along that line.

IMG_1108
Repeat on the other side so that you have a long skinny triangle when the pieces are laid together.

IMG_1121
Then cut out a 3.5 or 4in square for the head and cut off one corner so it can attach to the body.

IMG_1123
Now it is time to sew them all together! Starting with the head, place right sides together with the next strip and sew about a 1/4in from the edge. Then place the next strip along the bottom of that strip, right sides together and repeat. Once you have all strips attached down to the tail repeat with the second set of strips. Then iron your seams flat (sorry I don’t have a lot of pics for this part, but it’s just simple quilting)

IMG_1181
Then cut a couple inches of rick rack or ribbon. I melted the end  a bit with a candle lighter so it wouldn’t unravel.

IMG_1180
Pin the rick rack up against the right side of the snake head, pointing in from his nose. Then pin the two sides of the snake right sides together.

IMG_1182
Sew all the way around the snake, leaving a gap on one side of his head. It is easiest if you turn the corners and just leave a straight little gap.

IMG_1184
Now turn that bad boy right side out!

IMG_1186
Here he is before he was stuffed…

IMG_1189
Stuff a section (or two if they are small) and then sew across the seam where the two strips meet. You won’t see the stitching and segmenting the snake will make him able to bend and flop and cuddle better. Continue until head is stuffed.

 IMG_1191
Almost finished! Just close the gap on the head with a slip stitch. Then your snake just needs eyes. I made two snakes and sewed buttons on one and french knots on the other. IMG_1201

Your spring snakes are ready to meet the kiddos! Have Fun!

For Easter I made these coconut cupcakes with candy toppers – they were super easy cause I cheated 🙂

IMG_1618_2
Yep I used a mix, but it was gourmet and did NOT taste like it was out of a box! Here are the ingredients needed… and I’ll clue you in on making the toppers.

 IMG_1565

The mixing did actually take several steps but somehow I managed to keep them straight…

Mixing

and just like that the batter was ready to put in the cupcake wrappers and bake!

Wrapers
While they were baking the kids helped me make the candy toppers following a tutorial on Lisa Leonard’s blogYou just heat the starburst for approx 10 seconds in the micro, smash them flat and then use little cookie cutters to cut out cute little shapes. (I found mine at Micheals)

Candy toppers
After the cupcakes were baked and cooled, they were iced with a cream cheese icing, sprinkled with coconut and topped with the candy cut outs. I decided to cover my cake stand with M&M’s and put the cupcakes on top. That’s the one thing I came up with myself and if I do say so myself it looked pretty cute!

My boys REALLY liked the cupcakes! Can you tell? We didn’t have many leftovers…

I put the extra cutout starbursts around our “bunny bread” (which I also didn’t make – we did it low key this Easter so we would have lots of time for the fun and important things) BRILLIANT 🙂 That’s it – actual recipes are soon to come in this section, but hope you enjoyed this little story! Eggs
I had plans to create gorgeous stenciled Easter eggs inspired by a Martha Stewart tutorial. I bought the electrical tape she said to use, made cardstock egg stands, mixed up the dye and was ready to make the cutest Easter eggs in the history of our family. Within a few minutes it was clear that either Martha Stewart had lied or I sucked. Not wanting to believe either I decided the picture perfect eggs were not meant to be and pulled out paint, markers and scissors. I have never seen such Easter eggs, some were completely wrapped in electrical tape, paint was splattered, crazy designs were drawn and many unfortunate eggs were dropped, cracked and otherwise destroyed. Out of the mayhem came a lot of fun and silliness and a beautiful, perfect egg created not by a crafting guru but by my six year old. I think that is what art, life and Easter are all about. Out of the mess comes something even more beautiful..

Rose for mommy  This is my "moment" to savor this week – a special ritual via SouleMama. My son picking me picking me a flower for the first time this Spring.

It is a GOOD FRIDAY, full of sunshine, family, and meaning with a weekend full of Easter fun ahead!

So far my kids main memory of Easter has been of the mad dash to scoop up as much candy as they can as fast as they can while a throng of other children try to do the same – Yep that's right, the yearly Easter egg hunt (dash) at church.

We will be enjoying this crazy mayhem of a tradition again in a few days, but this year it is more important than ever for me to dwell on and appreciate the new life that Easter celebrates. It's been a hard, sad winter and I am thankful for new beginnings. I wanted a way to help my kids focus on the new life God gives us and to be thankful for the beautiful world that is blooming and coming to life around them – instead of the "just get more candy, me me me" mentality…

So we made little Easter bags and handed them out to our friends in the neighborhood. The kids had a blast filling a plastic egg and putting it and some Easter basket grass in little individual colored bags for each of their friends. (of course they snuck a few pieces of candy too:) I printed up some simple little tags with an Easter message and attached them with little bows and colored staples. I got all the supplies at Micheal's for a few bucks.

My boys were so cute running around the neighborhood with their baskets of treats. They were so excited to share them with friends and kept telling me for days how much it made them happy! Mission complete on learning a little generosity and battling the selfish bug 🙂 I plan to make this a yearly tradition
