These images are from Aaron’s ninth birthday in January, but this is pretty much how we do all bdays now. Beach cottage, swimming, surfing, launching rockets, campfire, good food, friends, s’mores, cake, sunsets and sunrises. It’s easy and by the morning after we are energized instead of exhausted and so very thankful for the three boys God has brought into our lives here on earth.

Together Jesse and shot a roll of black and white and a roll of slide film during this overnight party. It felt good to not be able to shoot more than 70 shots and that makes each frame more precious to me. Looking forward to slideshows with the kids and hopefully grandkids when they are grown.

1-24,25-2013 . Canon AE1, Olympus OM2 . Provia, TriX . Jesse took the shots of me and developed the black and white roll at home (and I cheated on the panoramic shots and cropped them)

  • Iryna - Your photography is so beautiful, Sharon. I can look and look at your photos for days. Many photos are taken of the beach, but the way you see/show it is somewhat different. Unique.

We have a tiny yard, at the home we don’t own, that we live in, right by the beach.

It has a chain link fence, that I hate.

I’m trying to see more of the beauty, less of the discontent, fear, regret.

I’m trying to not just make the best of things, but truly see the best. See the beauty that I would miss if I was elsewhere. Because discontent is blinding.

So we played in our postage stamp back yard by the fence I am always wishing was tall and wooden and covered with bougainvillea. The fence that would come with a mortgage and less time and opportunities to live as freely as we are right now, just soaking in the love of our three little boys. I want to give them the same fireplace to gather round each Christmas, and trees to nail up treehouses in, but they need more the wild soil and sand and sea. And I hope we are right in what we are doing, how we live each day is a decision, there is no middle ground.

So we played by that hated chain link fence, and I let myself accept it, love it enough to watch the light dance through. Just me and him, the last magic light and gratitude. And the pictures that came surprised me, beautiful patterns I could create no other way.

( and yes to keep it real – after frolicking in the magic light baby was done and ready for dinner in an instant, thus the last picture haha )

6-25-2013 . 5D . 35mm . VSCO2 Portra 400NC++ tweaked

I asked him to smell the flowers

I suggested they check out this cool wall

I asked my man to take my picture

I said he should look for Rawrs

I told him I loved him

I asked her to plant herbs with me

I begged them all to gather round our little garden

spring 2013 . Hasselblad 500cm . TriX400 . developed at  home by Jesse . he took the shots of me

Beacons is our favorite place, did some documenting with the Hasselblad

This awesome couple came along and were interested in the camera. They’re into film and were stoked to have their picture taken, and then she took ours

Then I helped our new friend make an image of his wife. Love how people respond to this camera, it’s so satisfying to shoot

Jesse worked for awhile on this portrait of me and then I scratched my nose at the worst time and the roll was done

6-1-13 . Hasselblad 500cm . TriX

Squiz came to California, among other things we wore our stretchy pants and went on a hike

1-13 . Canon AE1, expired Superia 400, shot of us by Jesse (and Aaron isn’t falling off a cliff, don’t worry)
